Match Report

Goodwin Cup

This was a spectacular final, with a pair of Pete's having the perfect start, 3 up after 3 with 2 gross and 1 net birdies, including a 40 yard chip in from Macey on the 2nd and a near miss "Hole in 1" from Hanlon on the 3rd.

The young guns, Kotwica and Gwilliam looked shocked, but crawled it back to 1 by winning the 5th and 8th, hoping to make the perfect come back before the turn by winning the 9th, however the opposite occured, a Par from Hanlon saw the Pete's back at 2 up.

Kotwica and Gwilliam won 10 & 12, using their shot holes extremely well to return the match to all square.

The match was evenly poised along the stretch of 13 & 14, with net Eagles and Birdies respectively from Gwilliam and Macey.

As we enter the final 4 holes, it was all square and now scratch matchplay, with Hanlon playing off 5 against a 12 & 15 handicapper, you would expect the Pete's to be favourites at this stage, however it was other Pete who took the initiative, sinking a long birdie putt on 15 to regain there lead of 1 up.

Noone could convert a birdie putt on 16, with both teams brushing the lip.

With 2 holes left, the job was simple, the Pete's had to win either 17 or 18 and the Cup was theirs. For Kotwica and Gwilliam, they needed to win 17 to avoid being dormie down 18.

They done just that, Kotwica sunk a nervous downhill putt to make par in what felt like 40mph winds.

All square down 18, noone in trouble off the tee, but noone on the green after their second shots, Hanlon was in prime position, pin high left edge and got up and down for the par to beat a bogey and win the Goodwin Cup 1up.

Big congratulations to the Pete's, never down in the match but taken to the wire, in what was a tough classic final. Rumour has it, this was Macey's 8 final with 7 runners up medals, finally he's got the winner. Well done Pete !

Commiserations to Kotwica and Gwilliam, big golfing future ahead of them with lots of boards on the wall just waiting to have their names engraved on.

Paul Drinkwater Plate

A fast start saw Scott make a net birdie, forcing Wilkins to make a gross birdie to half the 1st.

On the 2nd, O'Connell, Scott's partner, backed him up with another net birdie to go 1 up.

This was instantly neutralised with a par from Wilkins on the 3rd. Where is Mr Davies some may ask?

Catching the trees on the 4th, Davies yet again looked out of another hole, however with a wonderful lay up, followed by an approach shot and 1 putt, sees Davies finally got on the card to match the net birdie from their opponents.

Halving 5 and you'd think this match was wide open, however you'd think wrong, the Jack's suddenly woke up and won 7 holes in a row between 6 and 12 to see them win the plate 7&6.

Congratulations to Short & Tall Jack, our first 2019 Champions.

Commiserations to Scott and O'Connell, you should be proud of yourselves for reaching the final.
