Winter League Table 2018 - 2019 - as of 17th JanPosted: 17/01/2019
As we approach the business end of the Winter League Group Stage, please find the latest standings below.
Group A - Round 6 highlights (1 round to go)
The top 4 pairings have all but mathematically confirmed their qualification to the knockout stages of the Goodwin Cup and now only competing to finish as high as possible, with the following 8 pairs (5th – 12th) still in the hunt for the final 4 spots, but who has left it too little to late.
This week’s biggest gainers are N. Parker Giles & A. Maton, jumping from 10th (and missing out on qualification) to joint 2nd place, by replacing a score of 0 in play with a 46.
Winning round 6 with 50pts - M. Harris & R. James gained 7 places and are now odds on favourites to win the group.
In my previous update prior to Christmas, I used the phrase ‘nearly fallen off a cliff’ to describe D. Carpenter & B. Ward who slipped from 2nd to 7th, however in this update they are ‘hanging by a thread’ as they now slip out of qualification.
So as we enter the concluding round, how many points do the 4 pairs in 9th – 12th place require, to have a chance of reaching the knockouts of the Goodwin Cup, otherwise they fight it out for the Paul Drinkwater Plate.
D. Carpenter & B. Ward –at least 46 pts (they have scored 48 in a previous round)
J. Davies & J. Wilkins –at least 49 pts (they have scored 49 in a previous round)
D. Scott & B. Williams –at least 51 pts (their highest score to date is 45)
C. Scott & S. O'Connell –at least 53 pts (their highest score to date is 47)
Group B – Round 5 highlights (2 rounds to go)
As we enter the penultimate round this Sunday – this group is still widely open with lots of low scores still in play. The pressure is building on the 10 pairs currently out of the top 8 and the 2 pairs out of the top 16 but there is time to make a surge.
Top of the table, Gavin Mann & R. Mann have extended their lead to 9 pts with another 50 pointer in round 5. They’ll surely go on to win this group and be watching the battle unfold for 8th place in Group A.
With back to back 51 pts and winning round 5, G. Pinkney & M. Jones are this week’s biggest gainers, jumping from 11th (and missing out on qualification) to 7th place (not home and dry yet though). If they can post a trio of 51’s (to replace their lowest score of 33) they’ll surely leap into the top 3 and secure their place in knockouts of the Goodwin Cup.
Even with a respectable score of 44 pts in round 5, both pairings of G. Ash / R. Langdon & Shay Morgan / A. Bebber have seen themselves slip out of the top 8. Providing a gap for J. Biggs & I. Davies to make week by week progression.
Who will finish top 8 and progress to the Goodwin Cup?
Who will finish 9th – 16th and progress to the Paul Drinkwater Plate?
Who will be having a rest in February from Group B?
